State of Emergency in Japan: Singaporeans worry about healthcare

Foreign media have raised questions about Japan’s COVID-19 measures, such as the non-legally binding requests for closures of facilities and the low testing rate. A few Singaporeans working in Tokyo, Chiba and Kyoto shared their thoughts on the situation, as well as the worries they have about the potential collapse of the healthcare system.

Japan declared a month-long state of emergency on 7 April 2020. Prefectural governors can request for facilities to close, and for residents to stay at home. It also permits the requisition of land or buildings to establish temporary medical facilities, as well as the ability to forcibly acquire medical supplies. The government will decide whether to extend the state of emergency on 4 May 2020.
